Verizon Wireless to charge $2 for one-time payments by credit card, online or by phone. NEW YORK (AP) -- Verizon Wireless, the country's largest cellphone company, said Thursday that it will start charging $2 for every payment subscribers make over the phone or online with their credit cards. The company said this "convenience fee" will be introduced Jan. 15.

Verizon Wireless plans to charge subscribers a new $2 fee every time they pay their wireless bills online or directly over the phone. A leaked memo from the company first reported by Engadget, showed some of the details of the new plan. And the blog Phone Scoop got confirmation from a Verizon representative on Thursday of the change. The new fee will go into effect starting January 15 and doesn't apply to customers paying their bills with an electronic check or who enroll in autopay using a credit, debit, or AT&T cards, according to the memo posted on Endgadget. Verizons decision last week to purchase a chunk of 4G spectrum from cable companies is a huge development for both the future of television and wireless. The move frees up spectrum desperately needed for consumers, increases competition in the wireless industry, and emphasizes just how much anytime, anywhere is the future of TV and content consumption. Under the deal, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks will sell $3.6 billion worth of spectrum in the 700 MHz range ideal for mobile broadband to Verizon. This brings a notable amount of unused spectrum onto the market, covering over...

Verizon Communications Inc. has fired 40 employees involved in a contentious two-week labor strike over the summer for actions the company said ranged from acts of violence to making threats or racist comments. The employees, including 10 in Massachusetts, received letters over the weekend saying they were terminated for violating the companys code of conduct while picketing against cuts in their contract. The 45,000 unionized Verizon workers along the East Coast who went on strike in August agreed to return to work under the old contract while both sides negotiated a new bargaining agreement. "We respect the rights of our...

This summer, something remarkable happened: 45,000 Verizon workers went on strike, and no one save a few customers dealing with service interruptions much cared. The communications behemoth wanted more than 100 concessions on health care, pensions, sick days and outsourcing. Unions representing the workers said Verizon sought to void 50 years of collective-bargaining gains for middle-class workers, despite posting a 2.8% jump in revenue in the second quarter, up to $27.5 billion. Thirteen days later, those on strike went back to work on good faith, the company guaranteeing nothing other than continued talks. Its an indictment of how...

One of the oddities that seemed out of whack in this morning's weekly Unemployment Claims update was the explanation for the spike in this week's receipents of government generosity: apparently it had to do with the BLS handing out weekly benefits checks to striking Verizon workers. We will repeat the key word from that sentence because it bears repeating: "striking." Now, we may be wrong here, but if one is striking, one is not u-n-e-m-p-l-o-y-e-d, and hence the US government should probably not be using taxpayer money to double pay such individuals who have singlehandedly decided to forgo pay in...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of Verizon workers on strike pushed the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits last week to its highest level in a month. But excluding the work stoppage, layoffs likely fell. That should help ease fears that the U.S. economy is on the verge of a recession. [lol] Investors appeared to overlook the report. Stock futures held most of their early gains.

Leaders of the unions that have been on strike against Verizon Communications announced on Saturday that they were ending the walkout even though the two sides had not reached an overall settlement for a new contract. Beginning with the evening shift on Monday, the 45,000 striking workers will return to their jobs, posts that they left on Aug. 7 in the nations largest strike in four years, when General Motors workers held a two-day strike. Union leaders are ending the walkout, they said, because Verizon management had finally agreed to engage in serious bargaining on the contentious issues after the...

Two unions are on strike against Verizon Communications in protest of proposed company policies that the unions themselves helped bring about. The new Obamacare law, which both unions supported, dramatically hikes the cost of Verizons employee health care plan. Efforts to pass some of that cost on to employees have sparked outrage, and now a strike. Verizons health care plan is what President Obama commonly referred to as a Cadillac plan expensive and luxurious during his push to get health care legislation through Congress. The new law will levy a 40 percent tax on all health care plans...

Once again, union members are up to their tiresome intimidation tactics. In San Francisco, CA, a group of striking janitorial workers carrying SEIU signs at the Westfield Mall was caught on video taunting and scraping with security guards trying to open up the entrance. This video adds to a string of surfacing union acts within the past couple of days. Recently, an Ohio business man was shot for being 'non-union' and a Communication Workers of America (CWA) representative called for "open season" on "managers and scabs" of Verizon.
